Stephen Ssenkaaba

Journalism and Media Studies scholar

I am a doctoral candidate in Communication and Media Studies at the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication where I will defend my dissertation, “Digitizing in Indigenous Language News; the case of Uganda’s Bukedde media” in May 2026. I was a 2019 Knight Wallace Journalism Fellow at the University of Michigan. I hold a Master of Arts degree in International Journalism from Leeds University in the UK and a Bachelor of Social Sciences degree in Political Science & Sociology from Makerere University in Uganda.

My research examines the social, cultural, economic and technological factors that shape how journalists in Africa adapt to digital technologies and the implications of these adaptations to our understanding of digital journalism in non-western and global journalism contexts. My work draws on critical, cultural, Science and Technology Studies (STS) and post-colonial theoretical frameworks.

I have presented my work at major conferences including the International Communication Association (ICA) and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC).

I have more than 10 years of professional journalism experience in print and multimedia journalism obtained at the New Vision Printing and Publishing Company Limited, Uganda’s leading media organization. I currently serve as the International Liaison Officer for the Language and Social Interaction Division of the International Communication Association (ICA). I am also a conference reviewer for ICA and the Association for Education in Journalism Mass Communication (AEJMC).
